My Craft Room Makeover, Finally!

September 3, 2013 by Rebecca Wagner 8 Comments

I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally have my craft room finished! It was one heck of a slow makeover. It seems like forever since my hubby decided to move me from the basement to our youngest’s old room. That’s one of the few perks when your oldest spreads his wings and leaves the nest – the youngest always wants their room. ^__^

While my new craft room isn’t Heidi Swapp crafty amazing, it’s mine and works perfectly for my craftflow. I sometimes prefer function over beauty. Even more so when it cost mere pennies to make. Because this post is so picture heavy, I am leaving them smaller. If you would like to see more detail, click the picture to open Lightbox view. You will then be able to scroll through them all at one time.

How do you like my twine holders? I’m sure someone has thought of this before, but to me it was a lightbulb moment. I have soooo much twine, it should be illegal. I wanted an easy way to access it without having to move them all the time to get to the color I wanted like I had done before. That was pretty annoying.

While trolling the aisles at Michaels, I found these clearanced ribbon holders for $7 each. These ended up free for me because I had a leftover gift card from a friend. Bonus!! I noticed each holder had three grooves to hold the dowels, but only came with two. I purchased three more dowels and six finials to bump up the storage. Now all my twine and ribbon is hanging right above my work station ready to go for under $5. I also have room for a few more spools.

Here is my Spectrum Noir display I made out of foam board. The original design comes from Syzygy of Me. Check out her instructions if you would like to make your own. My hubby put up a power strip across my work area, so now I can have two machines plugged in at once. Yes, that is something I do. 🙂 You can’t see too much from this picture, but we used two 6′ pieces of counter top for my corner desk. Being a brilliant man, hubby used the legs off an old, beat up computer desk. That saved us lots by not having to build or buy cabinets!

With not having the storage of the cabinets, I need shelves. I found four bookcases laying around our basement that I had never realized were there. They were salvaged from my grandmother’s house after she passed away. I believe she or my grandfather built these. They both were very good working with their hands. Since they were pretty banged up, I gave them new life with the two colors of my new room. I like the contrast of the green with the white.

Labels, labels everywhere. Just couldn’t help myself. It does make it easier if you have friends over to craft. This way they know where everything is at without having to ask every five minutes. The little magazine holders are from Lori Whitlock. They hold all my completed cards that are size A2 or less. Now if I need a card to send, it won’t take forever to find. They are all tabbed and organized. The label for my embossing tote is Square1 Masterpiece adhesive fabric. Since it’s not sticky or hard to remove, I can change out the container if my cutting dies outgrow it.

Another rescue, this time from my father’s house. I wish he had two that matched, but it is what it is and they are in the closet (we took off the door for easy access). I saw the idea on Pinterest. It looks kind of like a paint chip with the graduated colors. I wish I could have placed the vinyl on the bottom right on the black one, but the doors are different. Oh well, they look pretty cool in person anyway.

This is probably my favorite! I knew I would miss my old super sized peg board that took up most of one wall in my basement. It really wasn’t feasible to have a huge one in the new room, so we searched high and low on how to incorporate a peg board while not spending a lot of money. This is what we came up with. It was cheap and easy, almost too easy. Lucky you, I remembered to take pictures when we were building it. I will have the tutorial up in a few weeks.

All my pretty paper stacks fit neatly in the bookcases. I just realized I am an labeling freak. All the stacks are marked on the spine for easy reference too. Looks like those stacks need to be put to good use very soon.

More easy storage shelves right above my computer screens. I love that everything is easy to find and grab.

I know that industrial grey tool storage is not the prettiest addition to my room, but I love it so much I had to hang it in the corner. It keeps all the bits and bobs organized while not taking up counter space. The price was right because it’s not pink. 😉
Phew, that was a lot of pictures! Hope you guys had as much fun looking at my new room as I had decorating it. If you have any questions or want to know more, just leave me a comment. I would love to hear what you think!

Wow, Becki! Awesome job. Love all the organization and the twine idea is brilliant. It is a pain to have to move things around when you are looking for stuff. Now you have it all where you can easily see it.

Now, get to crafting. Chop, chop! 😉

Oh my, it sure is! I love it. I made one for my Distress Inks too. I do need to make a few more because some of my inks are feeling left out.

Your craft room looks awesome! Now you just need to post a big picture of the space, so I can see where everything is in proximity. I like all of your labeling and storage. My FIL is building me a craft cabinet, and that will hide a lot of my stuff, but for anything that will be out in the open, I will be making sure it looks nice. You must be so excited to have your very own room all for crafting! You deserve it, have fun 🙂

Thanks, Therese. I tried that but the room is so small. Let me look through my pics. I’ll throw them up on FB for ya.
