Spring Centerpiece

April 17, 2014 by Rebecca Wagner Leave a Comment

Spring CenterpieceI saw a meme the other day that said, “If I had know Spring was only going to last 3 days, I would have enjoyed it more.” Man, is that so true. Well, it was true for me until I finished my Spring centerpiece.  Now I can stay inside, away from the newly fallen snow and enjoy my beautiful, sunny table. I had the forethought to go outside Monday, when it was warm, to cut some daffodils from around my koi pond. I can’t tell you how happy those make me in the little watering can. It is one of my favorite cuts from SVGCuts. The daffodil filled watering can is the cat’s pajamas!

spring centerpieceThis centerpiece was inspired by SVGCuts Spring Challenge. I hadn’t enter a challenge in so long, it felt really good to get back. I always forget the stress relief that comes with gluing paper together to get amazing creations. It’s also in being given a task and getting those creative juices flowing to see what you can come up with. Even though my little scene here is pretty simple at its core, it makes my heart happy to just stare at it. The watering can from Mother’s Garden has a baggie filled with enough water to cover the bottom of the stems. To keep it from leaking, the baggie has double-sided tape adhered close to the lip of the can. Hopefully it is adequate at feeding the flowers for a few days.

Spring CenterpieceThis project is also the biggest one I ever put together file-wise. Even though I didn’t combine multiple sets to make one piece, I used nine different SVGCuts sets. Wow, it doesn’t look like that many, huh? The bottom of the glove box from Mother’s Garden  box to hold my real hard-boiled eggs (gotta find those brown ceramic ones!) that are wrapped with the edging from Robin’s Return. I did combine two pieces of the edging in my software to get rid of the hard edge on the cut. The sign the bunny is looking at is also from Robin’s Return. The sentiment “Spring” is an freebie with a stamped “welcome.” With the flying butterflies from the Garden Nouveau collection.

spring centerpieceAnother little project that speaks of Spring is all the birds signing outside. My youngest son was complaining he couldn’t sleep because of all the birds in the backyard trees. After this incredibly long winter, it is a joyous sound of new life. Even though there are a few different species of birds hanging around, the Robin always catches my attention. Maybe because it is the only bird I ever recall growing up on the South Side of Chicago. We don’t get a lot of wildlife in the inner city. But before cutting my birds from Robin’s Return out, I did a little research. Male Robins are more black while the females are more brown in color. So I decided to cut them in white and color in with my Spectrum Noir markers. I should practice a little more on my coloring, but they look OK.

Then I decided my birds needed a love nest, so I cut the birdcage from Playful Parlour with trim from Robin’s Return dusted with Perfect Pearls in mint, and the “love” from the Design Elements kit. Some moss and speckled eggs, they are ready to start their family. I do realize that robins don’t lay pastel yellow or green speckled eggs, but I had them on hand and wanted their nest to be full. The doily underneath the cage is from the Doilies kit. I cut it from the rose patterned newspaper print  to keep those bird messes clean. 😉

I could not get a good picture of the banner. My lighting wasn’t the best even with my photo umbrellas. The Waterfall cards collection lent the egg shape from the Easter Egg card piece and the “SPRING” is from the 3D Letters. My banner is hung with Watermelon Taffy Trendy Twine. All cuts with the exception of solid colors were from Pink Paislee’s London Market collection dabbed with Old Paper and Tea Dye Distress Inks.

OK, here is a run-down of the nine SVGCuts kits I used (eight if you don’t count the freebie as a kit):

Design Elements (love on cage)
Playful Parlour (birdcage)
Doilies (doily under birdcage)
Waterfall Card – Easter Egg card (banner)
3D Letters (banner)
Mother’s Garden (watering can, glove box bottom)
Garden Nouveau (butterflies)
Spring freebie (sign)
Robin’s Return (sign shape, birds, and trim on cage and eggs)

We retired the old gold after too many print headaches (RIP, shiny troublemaker). This new satin finish keeps that luxe vibe but actually shows the lines—no more disappearing print when the light hits it. Sometimes change really is golden.
