Fang-tastic Blog Hop – Day 1

October 7, 2011 by Rebecca Wagner 75 Comments

Hello and welcome to the Fang-tastic Blog Hop- Day 1!  WOW!  I can’t believe it – my first Blog Hop, evar.  I am so nervous and excited at the same time.  I just hope I get this thing right.  I am so honored to participate in My Thoughts Exactly’s Halloween hop.  I am jumping for joy!   Alyssa is a sweetheart and her stamp sets are awesome.

If you are coming here from Alyssa’s blog, you are in the right place.  If not, click here to start at the beginning – you don’t want to miss anything!

Here is the line-up for your hopping pleasure today:

Alyssa @ My Thoughts Exactly – where you were
Becki @ The Happy Card Encouragment Factory – where you are
Bee @ Dare 2 Bee Creative – where you will be
BeeLinda @ Bee’s Hive O’ Drama
Cher @ Cher’s Studio
Jennifer @ Our Change of Art
Jessica @ Crafty Rocket Science
Kim @ Kimberly’s Crafty Spot
Lenae @ SugarGem Crafts
Thienly @ Mod Paperie

See, what did I tell you (present company excluded), aren’t they the black cat’s meow?!?  You are going to have sooo much fun today!

Anyhoo, I am excited you came here to see my project, so let’s get to it.  I decided to make a spooky sign for my sister to hang on her front door.  What do you think?

Since my nieces are still pretty young I didn’t want to make it scary.  Seems all the decor you can find at the store is more for adults and really creepy.

The black sign is a simple basic shape found in Make the Cut.  It was cut out twice, once with an old cereal box to make it sturdy and then WorldWin DoubleMates card stock in Heritage to add black and cover up the gray box.

This is only the second time I have used glitter for a project.  Although it was much easier this time as I used the Krylon Glitter Blast spray in Starry Nightand Orange Burst.  I really wasn’t that impressed with the spray at first.  One, it is pretty expensive for the amount you get.  Such a small can.  Even with a 40% off coupon I still paid over five bucks.  It was empty after spraying my sign twice.  Two, the coverage stunk for my purposes.  I was looking for a much heavier glitter look on the black.

After grumbling about my background, I moved on to my decorative top piece.  I love how this part came out!  I made the scalloped frame with a few different elements, starting with a basic circle.  I used the adorable Head Over Claws bat from the Bee Witching Halloween Collection by SVGs by Bee, a free filigree and font, then joined them to by sign front. I designed it so the black background would show through.  Since I made the front piece myself, it will be available as a download at the end of the post.  It is MINUS the bat, as he is not mine to give away but can be purchased here if you wanted to add him back in.

The paper is Peaches N’ Cream WorldWin DoubleMates sprayed with the Orange Burst.  Now, I was much more impressed with this color of the Krylon. Still think it is too expensive but this color had better coverage and I still have most of the can left.

I wanted to have some of Bee’s elements hanging off the sign to give it more interest.  I choose the same bat and a fat pumpkin from her Wicked Tags set.  Cool thing about this one is, I didn’t have to smash a hole in it’s head like I had to do for the bats because, guess what, they’re tags.  The best twine in the world was used in the Limited Edition Orange Licorice to hang these lovelies.

I blasted these too with the spray.  Adds a little je ne sais quoi, no?  I was going to put a little face on him but I didn’t want to take away from the bats cute little ones.

Hehehe, told you he was cute.  Bee did have faces in the file but I just cut out the bat and going to leave him blank.  Then I thought they would look cute with googly eyes.  With eyes then they needed fangs too.  So I just drew them in with a silver gel pen.  It adds to the silliness, non-scary factor which the girls will enjoy.

I also tried to distress the black background but it was a no-go.  I don’t know if it was the glitter that was stopping it or not.  I even used a Dremel with the sanding attachment and it didn’t even scratch.  LOL  Oh well, now on to the really fun stuff – giveaways!

First, I would like to thank the sponsors of the Fang-tastic Blog Hop.  They have provided some really awesome prizes for us to give away.  They are SVGs by Bee, The Digi Bistro and Trendy Twine.

For my part, I will be giving away a $10 gift certificate to SVGs by Bee to one lucky friend!
Simply do the following:
1.  Become a follower here on my blog and leave a comment telling me your favorite Halloween candy (be sure to include a way for me to contact you)
2.  For second entry, “like” The Happy Card Encouragement Factory on Facebook and leave another comment telling me you did so
That’s it.  I will be drawing a winner next Tuesday, October 11th, so be sure to check back to see if you won!
Now on to your next hop – it’s the fabulous Bee of Dare to Bee Creative.  Be sure to show her some love!

Spooky download here!
