Oven Recipe Box

When I first saw the doodles available on a few of the Sizzix cartridges available for the eclips, I was in love. Doodles that go along with almost ever cut. I fell for the oven recipe box immediately. How adorable! Also, I will use just about any excuse to draw with my machine. It just looks so cool.

 

Let’s take a look at the pen holder real quick. It’s a bit different from other holders I may have used before. According to the Sizzix site, it says, “The additional Pen Holder allows crafters to use any pen of their choosing. The Pen Holder will even hold glue pens so that crafters can draw shapes in glue and then sprinkle on glitter for a truly dazzling look.” They weren’t lying when they said it will hold any pen. This is truly a case where one size fits all, especially because the holder comes with five different adapters to fit multiple width pens, markers, you name it. What’s really nice is the holder comes in an attractive metal case to keep all your pieces together. The best part about this holder is that every pen is centered. That makes lining up exactly where you want to draw a piece of cake with those die cuts.

 

 

Now let’s see how it does on the actual project. On the Decorative Doodles – Vintage Baking cartridge this adorable oven shaped recipe box resides. Just what a few mothers I know would love. Let me preface by saying I haven’t used cartridges since my Cricut, so it took a little time and a call to Sizzix to get things sorted out. They have wonderful customer service, by the way. I was having trouble getting the doodle part and the actual cut lined up properly. If you are going to be using the doodle features on any of the Sizzix cartridges, here’s a tip – Center Point is your best friend. I’m sorry to say after watching every video I could find (and there weren’t many) this isn’t explained very well, if at all.

 

Here’s what I mean. After figuring out the size you want your cut to be, you must find the center point, set it on the controller before drawing. That way your carriage will come back to the center point so you can cut around your doodle. One video shows a cupcake being drawn using center point and then cut. I just feel it should have explained better, maybe step by step on what they were doing. I also was using a whole 12×12 piece of paper for the oven, so I think this is where I was being thrown off. Alas, I figured it out and all is well. Just wanted to make everyone aware. What I think would have been better is if the cartridge had a “doodle on shadow” to add to your queue as one item. That way you set the size once to your paper. The controller can prompt you to change out your pen holder for your blade once the doodle is drawn. (Are you listening Sizzix?!?)
